Boozhoo folks,
Happy new year to all! Best wishes for a prosperous New Year from Bkejwanong Library.
Just a note to tell you to stay tuned for First Nation Public Library Week. This year it is happening the week of February 14th to 19th, 2011.
This is a busy time for us. We have lots planned. Mark your calendars.
Monday, Feb. 14th – Coffee House. We will have local musicians playing some great music on this evening. Bring your sweetheart! The show begins at 7pm and runs until 9pm. Light refreshments.
Tuesday, Feb. 15th - We will be showing the movie “Reel Injun”. Running time: 88 min.
Here is a description from the NFB website: Hollywood has an impressive track record — one that spans more than 4000 films — of blatantly misrepresenting Native people and their cultures. Featuring interviews with filmmakers and activists such as Clint Eastwood, Jim Jarmusch and Russell Means – and clips from hundreds of classic films including Stagecoach, The Outlaw Josey Wales, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Dances with Wolves – Reel Injun delves into the fascinating history of the Hollywood Indian with razor-sharp insight and humour, tracing its checkered cinematic evolution from the silent film era to today.
Wednesday, Feb. 16th – Guest speaker: David White “Clans” 7-9pm. He will be talking about Ojibway Clans. Come out and listen!
Thursday, Feb. 17th – Guest speaker: Rick Fehr “Yellowbird”, 7-9pm. Rick Fehr will be telling us about Yellow Bird, a former Ojibway leader who lived in Wallaceburg, before there was a settlement there. Learn more about our traditional territory!
Friday, Feb. 18th – Genealogy featuring Susan Carr & Ancestry Library Edition, 10-12pm. Learn more about Ancestry Library Edition, a database available at Bkejwanong Library. Haven’t started researching your family tree yet? Start here today! Participants will learn how to use this database as well as have an opportunity to work with some of our great local genealogists. Come on out!
Saturday, Feb. 19th – Display of old Walpole Photos, 10-1 pm. We are working on developing an archive of old Walpole photos. Come look at the ones we’ve collected so far. Have some you’d like to share? Please bring them with you. Coffee, tea, and cookies will be provided.
We hope you can join us for these activities.
Have any ideas of what else we should offer? Please leave your comments and suggestions.
Keep warm, and we hope you’ll visit us at the library!
Baamaa pii!
